About FontDuo
FontDuo is a free typography resource dedicated to discovering, previewing, and mastering Google Font combinations.
What Is FontDuo?
Typography forms the backbone of web design, digital branding, and online readability. Yet choosing two fonts that harmonize effortlessly—without competing or clashing—often feels like guesswork. FontDuo was created to solve this challenge.
FontDuo provides an interactive catalog of curated font pairings, font comparison tools, live preview sandboxes, and in-depth typography guides. Every pairing showcased on FontDuo is 100% free and open-source, sourced directly from the Google Fonts library.
Who Is It For?
FontDuo is built for designers, frontend developers, product managers, independent creators, brand strategists, and agency teams. Whether you are building a modern SaaS application, launching an editorial blog, designing an e-commerce storefront, or establishing a corporate design system, our pairings give you immediate, production-ready typography combinations.
How We Evaluate Font Pairings
Rather than relying on automated algorithmic pairing or arbitrary lists, font pairings on FontDuo undergo rigorous visual and functional evaluation. We evaluate font pairs across seven foundational criteria:
1. Role Separation
Headings and body text serve distinctly different functional purposes. We select pairings where the heading font commands visual attention and sets stylistic tone, while the body typeface delivers effortless reading flow across extended paragraphs.
2. Contrast
Effective pairings require deliberate tension. We examine contrast in classification (serif paired with sans-serif, or geometric display paired with humanist body), stroke weight, letter structure, and stylistic temperature to avoid jarring visual discord.
3. Readability & Legibility
A body font must remain exceptionally legible at small sizes (14px–18px) across both retina and standard screens. We inspect open counterforms, clear distinction between ambiguous glyphs (such as capital 'I', numeral '1', and lowercase 'l'), and consistent rhythm.
4. Proportions & Geometric Harmony
Harmonious combinations share underlying proportional logic, such as compatible x-heights, cap-height ratios, and horizontal letter widths, ensuring natural optical alignment across responsive breakpoints.
5. Real-World Versatility
We test typefaces in practical digital contexts—navigational menus, tabular dashboards, forms, captions, multi-tier heading hierarchies (H1 through H4), and callout banners—ensuring complete versatility beyond basic mockups.
6. Technical Availability & Performance
Web performance matters. We prioritize type families with optimized file weights, comprehensive character and language support, clean hinting, and instant global CDN availability through Google Fonts.
Design Guidance, Not Universal Rules
Typography is inherently nuanced and subjective. While our evaluation guidelines represent proven principles of visual communication, no pairing rule applies universally to every brand, audience, or medium. A combination that feels bold and dynamic for a creative agency may feel inappropriate for a financial institution.
We present our recommendations as structured design guidance and inspiration. We encourage you to use our interactive preview tools to test your own actual content, adjust sizes and line heights, and adapt each pairing to your project's unique personality.
